The Koopalings: Bowers Kids or "Koopa Troop"?

The Koopalings have been in the Mario series since Super Mario Bros. 3, and (despite a nine year hiatus after their appearance in Hotel Mario and the introduction of Bower Jr. in Super Mario Sunshine) are still strong characters today, even appearing in Mario Kart 8 as playable characters. They've obviously come a long way, just take a look at their appearance in Super Mario Bros. 3 compared to how they look now.
So the question  remains, who are the Koopalings? Are they Bowsers kids or just the same species? If they're Bowsers kids who's the mother and why is Bowser Jr. so "special"? Hopefully I can answer some of these questions. Lets first take a look at their introduction in Super Mario Bros. 3.
Super Mario Bros. 3: In Super Mario Bros. 3, the Koopalings are portrayed as Bowser's very loyal children, each one taking control of his or her own little area to protect from Mario, eventually appearing as the boss to the world.

Question answered, right? Wrong, let's take a look at some later games like in Mario is Missing! for instance...

Mario is Missing: In this game the console booklet reads:
" Oh no! Bowser and his bad boys are back to a life of crime. This time, it's not Mario World — it's your world! From his Antarctic castle, Bowser hustles his cold-blooded crew of cantankerous Koopas into his powerful Passcode Operated Remote Transport And Larceny System (PORTALS). The twisted turtles transport themselves throughout the globe, where celebrated cities suffer shell-shocking crime waves, as turtles trash landmarks and loot ancient artifacts. With dough from his slimy scales, Bowser hoards hair dryers from the Hafta-Havit Hotline. His plot? Melt Antarctica and flood the planet! Whoa!" -

Okay... I'm not sure Bowser would refer to his children as "his bad boys" or "his cold blooded crew". So maybe they aren't his children after all, and then later we have New Super Mario Bros. Wii, where they're referred to as "Bowser's minions", and it is revealed that Bowser Jr. is the heir to the throne despite being the youngest. Well, being the youngest wouldn't matter if the other Koopalings weren't his brothers... So we've started to piece together the idea that the Koopalings aren't in fact Bowser's kids, just a group of Koopas that, for whatever odd reason, do his and Bowser Jr.'s bidding. But wait,  we finally get closure in 2012, when Shigeru Miyamoto goes on the record in an interview to say that currently the Koopalings aren't Bowsers kids. So there you have it, what used to be Bowsers kids now holds a simple spot as his "bad boys".
